WICEN is the emergency service arm of Amateur Radio, providing communications support during times of civil emergency (eg. fire, flood and storms) to primary emergency services such as the Police and SES, as well as providing safety communications to public events (eg. car rallies, bike rides etc.).
WICEN's full name is Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network where the background organisation of the Amateur Radio community is called the `Wireless Institute of Australia.
In each state WICEN is composed of volunteer operators from the Amateur Radio service who are trained in communications and message handling techniques.
WICEN can rapidly establish communication networks within a State or territory, and has the capability to extend these communications throughout Australia and overseas through the use of various equipment and operating frequencies.
Current Events
Maroochy Shire Council have recently donated a caravan for the club to use as a mobile WICEN facility. Thanks to the fantastic efforts of Vin VK4FVCW and Richard VK4YRP and their dedicated band of helpers, the caravan has had a major refit and stunning paint job.
We wish to acknowledge the magnificent support from Maroochy Shire Council and in particular, Councillor Greg Rogerson, for his efforts and assistance to help realise this project which will be a significant communications centre in the event of a major emergency on the Sunshine Coast.
